Wifi in Schools – Known risk, perilous outcomes, irrefutable liability

In 2011, the World Health Organization categorized wireless (wifi) radiation emitted from cell phones, laptops, tablets, mobile phone bases, baby monitors, and routers, as a Class 2B, or possible, carcinogen. This classification was based on adult data, and did not take into account that children are more susceptible to radiation effects, considering they have thinner skulls, more aqueous body/brain, and faster cell turnover. In 2013, the American Academy of Pediatrics requested the Federal Communications Commission consider reclassifying wifi radiation as a Class 2A, or probable, carcinogen (see attached letter), in consideration of the rapid rise in use of cells phones and tablets by young children.

Wifi radiation has two known and heavily researched effects on humans 1) opens calcium gated channels in cells 2) emits heat. To date, there is significant research evidence showing increased incidence of oligocarinoma (brain cancer) and acoustic neuroma (inner ear cancer) in adults with 20 year cell phone use, and DNA fragmentation and decreased sperm motility in adult males with 20 year lap top use (reference research below).

A recent symposium by researchers for physicians in Toronto, reported in numerous studies, harmful effects of wifi radiation from cell phones, laptops, tablets etc. on human health. This symposium was sponsored by the Environmental Health Women’s Hospital.

Recent film Mobilize (trailer below) also documents research evidence showing harmful effects of wifi radiation on humans.

February 3, 2015 press release “Researchers Conclude Wireless Radiation Causes Cancer After Latest Scientific Findings Announced” by the National Association for Children and Safe Technology are calling for a “Turn it off 4 kids” initiative requesting all children’s health and cancer prevention organizations make the issue of children’s health and exposure to wireless radiation in educational settings an immediate priority for 2015.

Above initiatives by the World Health Organization, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Association for Children and Safe Technology, in light of accumulated research data, indicate that radiofrequency radiation emitted from wireless devices (cell phones, tablets, routers etc) poses known and unknown (long term) harm to children, and should be removed from schools immediately. While This issue is under active consideration by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Canadian Medical Association, Council of Family Physicians of Canada, Canadian Paediatric Society, and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (Dr. Hugh Scully, BA, MD, MSc, FRCS[C], FACS), it took Health Canada ten years to implement mandatory use of lead shields during x-rays with pregnant women, following research showing x-rays caused cancer. How long can children afford to wait, when sustainability is now in question?
Schools are tasked with ensuring that policies and procedures implemented on a wide scale are safe for children, such as the installation of wifi and use of devices that emit radiofrequency radiation. School teachers, principals, and school boards will be held liable for submitting children to known safety risks. Wireless radiation has proven to NOT be safe for adults, with children being exceedingly more vulnerable to radiation effects. A whole generation of children are being forced to submit themselves to what could be termed the most dangerous experiment known to humankind, radiofrequency radiation.

The time to act is now. Join the Refuse to Use movement to create sustainable futures for all children. The following measures should be taken immediately to create safe schools, daycares, preschools, and facilities where children frequent e.g. libraries, recreation centers, etc.

  1. Remove all wireless devices from schools, including routers, wireless laptops, cell phones, and tablets.
  2. Prohibit the use of personal handheld devices in schools by children.
  3. Restrict the use of teacher’s handheld devices to staff room, or > 20’ from children.

Cris Rowan has spent the last 35 years working as a pediatric occupational therapist in homes, schools and clinic settings. In 2004 Cris began collating screen impact research into a topically organized Fact Sheet with now over 600 research referenced articles. Cris started her research-referenced blog Moving to Learn for parents, teachers and clinicians in 2005 writing about timely, provocative and controversial topics related to screen overuse/addiction. Cris’s Fact Sheet research was foundational for her Foundation Series Workshops as well as for publishing her book in 2010 “Virtual Child – The terrifying truth about what technology is doing to children”. To date Cris has provided over 450 workshops for students, parents, teachers and clinicians under Zone’in Programs. During Covid in 2019/20 she converted these workshops into 75 hours of instructional webinars now available on Reconnect Webinars. All webinars have AOTA Approved Provider Status for CEU provision. Since 2018 Cris has been an integral member of Fair Play – Screens in Schools committee launching the comprehensive Action Kit for teachers in 2024. Cris’s OT services in BC First Nations schools was integral for developing her revolutionary Screenbusters Program where she trained students to provide ”Tech Talks” for their peers in classrooms. Screenbusters is a free, online, 5-hour certification for teens who are supervised by certified Balanced Technology Management staff. All of Cris’s above achievements are research-referenced, strategy focused and evidence-based. You can reach Cris at crowan@reconnectwebinars.com or book a consultation at CrisRowan.com.

Playgrounds – The epicentre for child development, behaviour and learning

I just returned from Anahim Lake, a small community in the Chilcotin area of British Columbia and home to the Ulkatcho First Nations people. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you a journey toward child health and wellness that took place over the course of the past four years and comprised a number of community initiatives.

THE BRIEF – Creating Sustainable Futures

No one would dispute the statement that healthcare and education are in trouble. Since the infiltration of screen-based technologies into every home, school, community and workplace setting, indicators for health, wellbeing and performance have plummeted. The ways in which we are raising and educating children with screens are no longer sustainable.
