Bill C-648 – An Act Respecting the Prevention of Potential Health Risks From Radio frequency Electromagnetic Radiation

Good afternoon,

As you are aware, we joined MP Terence Young in Ottawa for the introduction of Bill C-648 – “The Warning Labels for Radio Apparatus Act”. We are very pleased with the cross-party support we have received with 15 MP’s publicly committing to support the bill to date, including former NDP health critic MP Libby Davis who requested to be a seconder on the Bill. We also received coverage in ten separate media outlets on the day’s following the event.

We are disappointed, but not surprised, with the reaction from the Industry. Their dismissive comments tell us they will continue to keep their safety warnings buried in their manuals. Warnings that clearly state a minimum distance that all devices should be held away from our bodies and those of our children. See CWTA (Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association) comments HERE in response to Bill C-648. This lobby association represents most major telecom companies in Canada.

Momentum is building around the world in countries dealing with the unsafe use of technology. The French Parliament recently passed a law requiring all advertisements regarding cell phones must now show a device (ear buds or speaker mode) that limits exposure to radiation. The same French law banned the use of WI-FI in day care centers and nurseries for children three years of age and younger. See HERE for our interpretation of the new law.

Taiwanese lawmakers just last week passed new legislation in which parents who allow children younger than two years of age to use tablets and smartphones face fines. In Belgium it is illegal to market cell phones to children younger than 7 years of age.

While the 15 supportive MPs to date is good start to Bill C-648, there are another 293 MP’s across Canada that share in the responsibility to protect Canadians. We ask that you click HERE to send an e-mail to your MP. If your MP is on the list of supporters found in the middle of the campaign page, please thank them. If they are not, we ask you to send them an email outlining why you think they should support this important bill. We have supplied suggested points for you to consider.

C4ST will be in Ottawa next week discussing Bill C-648 with select MPs. All Canadians have a right to know that there is a safe way to use and enjoy technology. Bill C-648 is a major step to help raise awareness.

Having worked in school settings for over 3 decades, Cris is committed to improving student health while also easing the job of learning for children. Cris is a well-known international speaker and author to teachers, parents and therapists globally on topics of sensory integration, learning, attention, fine motor skills and the impact of media content including video games, social media and pornography on children’s brain and body development. Cris has a BSc’s both in Occupational Therapy and in Biology, is a SIPT certified sensory specialist, and has Approved Provider Status for CEU provision with the American Occupational Therapy Association. Over the past 3 decades, Cris has provided over 350 keynotes and workshops, writes monthly articles for her blog Moving to Learn, publishes the monthly Child Development Series Newsletter, and is designer and creator of Reconnect Webinars which offer research evidenced information for teens, parents, teachers and clinicians to manage balanced between screens and healthy activities. Cris is member of the Screens in Schools committee with Fairplay for Kids, member of the Institute for Digital Media and Child Development and sits on the Board of Directors for the Global Alliance for Brain and Heart Health. Cris has two adult children, Matt and Katie who grew up without screens.
